Resveratrol is important for bone health.

Resveratrol is a natural polyphenolic compound which long has become known, thanks to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. A new Danish study now reveals that it is also very beneficial for bone health.

Bone strength and health depend on the proper and healthy balance between osteoblasts – cells that synthesise the new bone tissue, and osteoclasts – cells which break down bone tissue. Based on earlier trials on rats showing that resveratrol stimulates osteoblast activity and increases osteoclast activity, researchers have taken on to evaluate the effect of resveratrol on bone metabolism in humans.

A total of 66 obese men with metabolic syndrome participated in the study. Researchers compared the effects of low-dose resveratrol intake (150 mg daily) against high-dose resveratrol intake (1000 mg daily) for 16 weeks. They assessed bone turnover, bone structure and bone mass. Then changes which occurred in bone mineral density, bone mineral content and bone alkaline phosphatase were measured. Bone alkaline phosphatase gives information about osteoblast activity, which increases when new bone tissue is formed.

The study showed that after 16 weeks spinal bone mineral density increased by 2.6% in patients who were administered high doses of resveratrol compared to those who took nothing. The analysis revealed that a correlation exists between resveratrol intake and the volume of bone density. Also a correlation was reported between resveratrol intake and bone alkaline phosphatase and it was greater in patients who took resveratrol.

The authors concluded: “We have investigated the effects of resveratrol on bone, and found dose-dependent and correlated increases in bone alkaline phosphatase and lumbar spine volumetric bone mineral density (BMD) after only 16 weeks of treatment……We consider that resveratrol stimulates bone formation and mineralisation directly.”
